Icon Truth Meme
14th-Feb-2006 07:30 pm
King K
Since there's a lot of icon hostility floating around, I decided to do this:
ICON TRUTH MEME
-Comment with your username and people will comment with what they feel about your icons. COMMENT TO THOSE PEOPLE ANONYMOUSLY, even if it's good or bad. Feel free to use examples, but please try not to hotlink. If you need to, use a regular link to an image.

So, anonymous is on, IP is off. PIMP THIS PLEASE.
And please don't be rude when commenting, there is a difference between constructive and destructive criticism.

Also, even if you feel like you're not the best icon maker, please comment anyway, or comment to other people. This is supposed to help people grow, and see their strengths and weaknesses.

SO DO IT. THANKS.

I think you're hit or miss. You either have GORGEOUS icons or MEH icons. Plus, the whole elitist thing can only go so far before you start looking like a tool. I won't take any of your icons anymore, even though some are fabulous, just because you have become all elitist and snooty about them and yourself.

That said, I think my favorite batch of yours was your Dawn of the Dead.

someone said, You have this absolutely unique style that no one can touch and I was gonna say the same thing.

so many of your icons in this post (http://sin-fonia.livejournal.com/53178.html#cutid1) are *amazing*. I don't know how i missed that post! cuz going down the page I was like in awe and was all like 'oooh i wanna make icons like Eri's!'. :P

You've got many icons that are like perfection. And then you have ones that have a brilliant crop, use of color... but maybe it's too sharp or grainy the text is fuzzyish. Like this one:

Image hosting by Photobucket (http://photobucket.com)

I LOVE the coloring, lighting and the cropping... with that little grey area. But then the kerning on the text wasn't really perfected. LOL but you know WHO is a nut about that! And then their faces are a little grainy or blotchy whatever the word is, but I know that image to begin with is a tough quality to work with. I usually try to blur it a bit on a low strength. Like not even every little area, but just parts so that it's a lil smoother. But other than that it's a great icon. And one of my b/a icons I've seen you do. The prom one is very nice too.

One icon that really stood out to me in that post i linked to: I just love it so much. As i was scrolling down I kept looking back up at it. It just draws my eye to it for some reason. The coloring and crop is just lovely and it's sharpened/smoothed just enough. the text is interesting. Heee see i wanna do one like that now... cuz i used to include a brush like that kind with text, but i stopped. but yeah, love it.

You make the best animated icons ever.
- it's like funny of course, but classy. b/c of that texture and the coloring.

- SO. COOL.

all these are from your first post at _lushkink

OK, I'd start with your cropping. Always effective, very lovely!

The rotation of the first, then the choice of shot for the second, and repeating her legs - very cute! Then of course who icons legs? Lauren icons legs! Yay for the third (which is one of my favorite overall icons of yours as well...) And the fourth? At first glance it's typical, and normal, and then you realize what scene it is and Buffy's just a bit off center and Angel's dark in the back. Nice! No text needed, great coloring, another one of my faves! And the fifth, I hope speaks for itself. Great crop. I think it could use a little texture in that bottom left, but that's more personal opinion than objective point...

Your coloring is usually pretty shaky. It's usually because of the gradients and cap quality, here's a couple good ones:
Image hosting by Photobucket Image hosting by Photobucket Image hosting by Photobucket Image hosting by Photobucket
The first one just adds to the funny; kind of natural coloring, but you know it's been fixed up. The second one is amazing, and almost contributes to Buffy's power. Very warm, dark, totally Buffy! And the third works with the completely natural coloring. Obviously Buffy's in blue for a reason, and here it stands out very vibrantly, and the light above, and then you notice Angel. Great colors! And the fourth is one of your better uses of a gradient(s?)

And here are the more shaky ones:

Probably because of the blending option the gradient's set on, it throws the icon off a bit. It's something I know you're big on, and a lot of times it works, like #2 in the first example set, but sometimes it seems like you should've kept playing with the icon. It feels unfinished in a way.

And then I'll end with some very stunning ones! I love these!

All of these have the two things I talked about up there, plus one more. It seems like your text/typography is hit and miss. These last three work soooo well because you've brought everything together. The gradient, crop and text is AMAZING in the Oz one. When I saw it again I was wowed! It's very much the old school way icons used to be; kinda of classy and elegant and romantic. Same with #2; I love when people make use of the Blue of Illyria, but even moreso I love when they digress from it. Orange! And text! And then #3, obviously is the texture usage. Great placement and color, and wonderful, simple text!

Hope that helped and wasn't too harsh at all!

I love your icons and am glad that you make so many qaf ones. I think you always have really unique cropping and the coloring on some of your icons is just really amazing. Sometimes your coloring gets really dark though. Other than that I can't really think of anything to criticize :)

I really like them. It seems like you see things in the screen caps that others don't. Nice job.

Hmm, I would suggest not using the sharpen tool a lot. Your icons look very grainy. However, I really like the manips you made. Very cool!

I think you sometimes have problems with blur and sharpening -- there are icons that are a bit blurry, like the one with Professor("logically") and others that are clearly oversharpened, like hide&seek (although the icon is really nice apart from the pixels on the lamp post).
